A webcam is a digital camera attached to a computer trough a USB port. The camera captures images that can be accessed and transmitted using the Internet. Webcam images are usually used for instant messaging, video conferencing, and video security purposes.
Webcams are generally small cameras with low resolution that capture images in JEPG or MPEG format and then upload them on the Web sever via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). A webcam is generally used to make Web communication more personal. Most commonly a webcam is used during instant messaging or for real-time chatting. They are also used for video conferencing with colleagues, clients and customers. You can also use webcams to send video e-mails. There are many different types of webcams available today—ranging from simple webcams to more complex ones. To understand how a webcam works, we need to see how a simple webcam works. A simple webcam basically comprises a digital camera that is connected to your PC via a USB port. Although the digital camera is just a camera that captures digital images, it becomes a webcam with the help of the software that controls it on your PC. In this software, you can preset the rate at which frames are captured from the camera and transmitted to viewer(s) at some other location. The rate at which the frames are captured and transferred in one second is called 'frame rate'. If you want to transmit streaming video, you must set frame rate to a minimum of 15 frames per second (fps). However, 30 fps is the ideal configuration for transmitting streaming videos. In case, you need to transmit data at higher frame rates, you will need a better and hi-speed internet connection. After a frame is captured, the webcam software broadcasts the image over the Internet. These images can be broadcasted using many different methods. Out of these, the simplest method is where the webcam software converts the captured images to JPEG format and uploads them to a Web server using FTP. The first webcam was created in 1991 and was pointed toward the Trojan room coffee pot at Cambridge University's computer science department. This webcam was functional for 10 years until 2001, when it was finally switched off on August 22nd. One of the oldest webcams that is still functional is FogCam that is located at San Francisco State University. This webcam is functional since 1994. These days, computer manufacturers such as Apple have started building webcams within the laptops and computer screens. With this the need to use and external webcam is eliminated.
